Tyson Place
Project Location
Knoxville, Tennessee
Tyson Place’s 70,000 square foot renovation converted the 1936 Tyson Middle School into a premium professional office building for multiple tenants and received the 1998 Brick Masonry Silver Award for the restoration category, which is presented by the American Institute of Architects. Special attention was given to respecting original details and materials such as exposed brick, marble, mosaic tiles, terrazzo, wood doors and transoms, and restoration of the original light fixtures. The restored building maintains the integrity of the 1936 design and décor, but is reinforced by new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and sprinkler systems. In addition to the architecture, interiors and engineering design, designers gained National Historic Certification Designation and certification with the Tennessee Historic Commission and the National Park Service. The Owner receives a significant tax credit for each dollar spent on the building due to efforts to maintain authenticity of design and execution.
