Armed Forces Training Center

Project Location

Johnson City, Tennessee

The Armed Forces Training Center was designed for the State of Tennessee Department of the Military. A facility was needed that could be utilized by the Army, Marines, and several National Guard Units. The challenge was to preserve and enhance the identity of each branch, but create shared areas to achieve maximum efficiency. As a result, the project totals 89,000 square feet and consists of three buildings. A main two-story facility encompasses administrative offices, recruiting offices for each branch, classrooms with computerized firing range training systems, drill hall, kitchen, arms storage areas, lockers and physical fitness areas. A boathouse was designed for the Marines, as well as the associated service bays and offices. The third building houses communal storage space. Included in the design was a colonnaded courtyard at the servicemen’s entrance into the facility, which creates an ideal location for a ceremonial parade yard. Design was complete in only six months and contractor bid at almost 2 million dollars under budget.
